WordPress 7.0.1

Release Date: July 9, 2026

WordPress 7.0.1 is now available — a maintenance release that ships 31 bug fixes across Core, the Block Editor, admin interface, and media handling. If you are running WordPress 7.0 "Armstrong," this patch addresses several regressions and compatibility issues reported since the major release in May.

What Changed in 7.0.1

WordPress 7.0.1 is a minor release focused on stability. No new features — just squashed bugs and smoothed edges. The release was co-led by Carolina Bernal, Estela Rueda, and others following the schedule posted in mid-June.

Here are the key areas addressed:

  • Block Editor fixes — Several regressions introduced in 7.0 have been resolved, including issues with pattern insertion, cover block alignment, and list block nesting. The editor feels noticeably snappier after the fix batch.
  • Admin UI polish — Layout glitches in the site editor sidebar and the template editor have been corrected. The admin bar no longer overlaps with viewport edges on narrow screens.
  • Media handling — Uploads failing silently on certain server configurations have been fixed. Image scaling in the media modal is more reliable across browsers.
  • PHP 8.5 compatibility — A handful of deprecation notices and errors triggered under PHP 8.5 have been patched, notably in the media library and the REST API response formatting.
  • Security hardening — The wp_kses CSS filtering function received a fix for a potential corruption issue. While not a critical vulnerability, it prevents malformed CSS from passing through the sanitizer.
  • Mail functionality — The wp_mail function now handles edge cases around attachment paths more gracefully, fixing a regression where emails with certain attachment structures failed to send.

Who Should Update

All WordPress 7.0 sites should update to 7.0.1. The release is fully backward compatible — no breaking changes, no database upgrades, no new requirements. Sites still on WordPress 6.x are not affected but are encouraged to plan their upgrade to the 7.0 branch when ready.

The update is available via the WordPress admin dashboard (Dashboard → Updates → Update Now) or by downloading the fresh copy from WordPress.org.

The Road Ahead

WordPress 7.1 is already being planned with a target release date of August 19, 2026. The next major release is expected to focus on real-time collaboration features, further block editor enhancements, and the new AI infrastructure that was laid down in 7.0.

For now, update to 7.0.1, confirm your site is stable, and keep an eye on the Make WordPress blog for 7.1 development updates.
