Terraform 1.16.5
Terraform 1.16.5 was released on September 30, 2026. This is a patch release on the 1.16 line that addresses two defects reported against the resource-identity work and the handling of tainted state.
Overview
Terraform 1.16.5 follows 1.16.4, which shipped on September 23, 2026. The changelog for this release contains no new features, no deprecations, and no breaking changes. It is a focused bug-fix build intended for users already running the 1.16 series.
Fixes
- Tainted state crash: Terraform previously crashed when it encountered a tainted instance state that was not accompanied by a valid status. The crash path is now guarded (issue #39287).
- Resource identity during delete: An issue in which resource identity could be nil while a resource was being deleted has been corrected (issue #39285). This matters for providers that rely on resource identity to match objects during destroy operations.
Context From the 1.16 Series
Terraform 1.16.0 landed on August 26, 2026 and was a substantial release. It introduced planned private data for providers, so provider-specific state can be preserved between plan and apply, and added a store block to terraform_data for holding ephemeral and sensitive values across both phases. Import blocks inside modules became supported, allowing declarative imports to be defined in reusable modules rather than only at the root.
The series also added machine-readable output to terraform state show -json and terraform workspace list -json, Mermaid output for terraform graph -format=mermaid, a -scope flag for terraform console, and destroy = false support in lifecycle blocks. Resource action triggers gained on_failure modes of halt, taint, and continue, and provisioners were corrected so that bastion_host_key is applied as configured, an upgrade note worth reviewing if you use provisioners.
Upgrading
Patch releases within a minor version are drop-in replacements. Update through your usual channel: brew upgrade terraform on macOS, your distribution package on Linux, Chocolatey on Windows, or a tool such as tfenv. Confirm the result with terraform -version. Because 1.16.5 only contains fixes, there is no state migration step and no configuration change to make.
What's Next
Hashicorp has already published 1.17.0-beta1, 1.17.0-beta2, and 1.17.0-rc1, with the release candidate tagged on October 7, 2026. A stable 1.17.0 is therefore the next major milestone for users who prefer to stay on the newest feature line rather than the 1.16 patch series.
