nvm 0.40.6
OK NVM 0.40.6 JUST DROPPED ☕️ Less than 24 hours after 0.40.5 and Jordan's team already pushed another one. Let's talk about what actually matters here.
First off — loongarch64 support. If you're on a LoongArch machine (and if you are, hi China), nvm can now install Node on it. That's a huge deal for a very specific group of people. The rest of us can move on.
But the real story? Alpine Linux arm64-musl support. If you've ever tried to run nvm on an ARM Docker container running Alpine, you know the pain. That bug is dead now. Period.
TL;DR of the fix list:
- ✔️ arm64-musl on Alpine — the big one
- ✔️ cached artifacts now include source-cached and io.js (no more phantom missing versions)
- ✔️ base64 auth header sanitization — security thing, trust them on this one
- ✔️ commented .nvmrc files no longer break nvm_ls (yes, that was a thing)
- ✔️ curl aliases bypassed — so your fancy shell alias for curl won't break nvm anymore
- ✔️ darwin-x64 binary path fixed for Node < v16 on Mac
- ✔️ package migration on reinstall — migrated packages AND set alias when target already installed
Oh and they also cleaned up the error messages. nvm install with missing args? Focused error now. nvm exec with no version and no .nvmrc? It actually warns you instead of failing silently. These are the kind of QoL fixes you don't notice until you desperately need them.
The Alpine test suite is now a proper CI matrix too — so this musl support isn't gonna break next week. They mean it.
Bottom line: 0.40.6 is a solid patch. If you use nvm on Docker or ARM, upgrade NOW. If you're on a basic macOS setup, still worth it for the auth sanitization alone. Run nvm upgrade and move on with your day.
