What is Runway?

Runway is an AI-native creative platform that grew out of Runway ML, one of the earliest companies dedicated to making machine learning usable for artists and filmmakers. Today it is best known for Gen-4, its video generation model, and for a full editing suite where every tool, from green screen removal to object erasing, is powered by AI.

The company was founded in 2018 by Cristóbal Valenzuela, Anastasis Germanidis and Alejandro Matamala, and its models helped define the modern text-to-video era. Gen-1 and Gen-2 showed that AI could transform existing footage, while Gen-3 Alpha and Gen-4 moved into generating fully original, cinematic clips from text or images.

Pros and cons

Runway's strength is breadth: generation, editing, audio and VFX tools live in one place, and the results are consistently among the most cinematic in the field. The editing features, especially green screen and object removal, genuinely save hours of manual work.

The downsides are cost and control. Credits run out fast on heavy generation, and like all AI video models, Gen-4 can still produce glitches in hands, faces and fast motion that need re-rolls or manual fixes.
