Nuke

Nuke is The Foundry's node-based compositing application and the software behind the final image of most Hollywood films and TV shows. You build a composite as a network of nodes, where each node performs one operation like keying, tracking or grading, which makes even the most complex shots manageable and repeatable. Modern versions add machine-learning tools that automate rotoscoping and cleanup work that used to take artists days.

What is Nuke?

Nuke is a node-based compositor, which means you build your final image by connecting nodes on a graph instead of stacking layers on a timeline. Each node does one thing: read footage, pull a key, track a point, grade a plate, or merge layers together. The graph is your composite, and it stays editable forever, which is essential for film work where shots pass through many hands.

The software was born inside Digital Domain in the early 90s, where it was used on effects shots for films like Titanic, and The Foundry has developed and sold it commercially since 2007. Today it is the de facto standard for high-end compositing: if you watch a blockbuster with invisible effects, there is a good chance Nuke assembled the final frames.

Nuke also covers the broader workflow. Nuke Studio adds a timeline for conforming and reviewing, NukeX bundles extra tools like the deep compositing toolkit, and the CopyCat node lets artists train small machine-learning models on their own footage to automate tasks like painting out rigs or cleaning up plates.

The fundamental pattern is Read, then process, then Merge, then Write: you read your plate, key or track it, merge the elements, and write out the final render.

For hobbyists and students, Nuke Indie offers the full feature set at a fraction of the price, and there is an educational license program. Learn the node graph with simple two-element composites first; once you are comfortable merging and keying, the bigger tools like CopyCat and deep compositing start to make sense.

Pros and cons

Nuke's node graph is its greatest strength. Complex shots stay organized, changes are easy to make, and the pipeline-friendly design lets studios automate huge amounts of work with Python. The machine-learning features, especially CopyCat, genuinely save artists days of tedious cleanup.

The downsides are the cost, the learning curve, and the hardware demands. Nuke is expensive even at the Indie tier, the node workflow takes real time to internalize, and heavy deep composites will push any workstation. For simpler motion graphics it is also the wrong tool; that is After Effects territory.
