What is Materialize?

Materialize is a small, focused utility that does one job brilliantly: it takes a single image and generates the full family of PBR maps a real-time renderer needs. Drop in a photo of a stone wall and out come normal, roughness, height, ambient occlusion, metallic and specular maps.

It was created by BoundingBox Software and has been a quiet favourite of indie developers and hobbyists for years, mainly because it is completely free and remarkably easy to use. You do not need to understand how each map works to get useful results, though the tool happily teaches you as you go.

Think of it as the budget version of Adobe's Substance 3D Sampler. It will not match Sampler's AI-powered analysis, but for the price of zero it covers a huge amount of everyday material needs.
