🕺 3D Animation

DeepMotion

DeepMotion is a browser-based motion capture and animation service. Its flagship Animate 3D tool turns ordinary video of a person into 3D animation: the AI tracks the body and a physics-based character controller turns the motion into stable, natural-looking animation that never sinks through the floor.

What is DeepMotion?

DeepMotion is a browser-based motion capture and animation service. Its flagship Animate 3D tool turns ordinary video of a person into 3D animation: you upload footage, the AI tracks the body, and a physics-based character controller turns the motion into stable, natural-looking animation that stays grounded in the scene.

The company was founded by ex-Google engineers and has roots in AI and robotics research. Instead of just copying joints from the video, the software simulates a character that physically reproduces the motion, which handles noise and occlusions more gracefully than pure tracking.

Everything runs in the browser, so there is no heavy software to install, and the output can be exported as FBX for game engines and animation pipelines.

Key Features

  • AI motion capture from uploaded video in the browser
  • Physics-based character controller that produces stable, grounded motion
  • Multi-camera and multi-person capture options
  • Cleanup and editing tools for the captured motion
  • Export to FBX and other formats for game engines
  • Free tier to try the service without paying

How to get started

Create a free account at deepmotion.com and open Animate 3D. Upload a video of a person moving, ideally with good lighting and the whole body in frame.

The service processes the video in the cloud and returns a 3D animation you can preview and adjust in the browser. When you are happy with the take, export the character and motion as FBX.

  • Sign up for a free DeepMotion account
  • Upload a video with a clearly visible person
  • Let the AI track the motion and simulate the character
  • Preview and tweak the animation in the browser
  • Export as FBX and import into your engine or editor

Use cases

  • Capturing game animations without a motion capture suit
  • Rapid prototyping of character movement for indie games
  • Animation for virtual reality avatars and social platforms
  • VFX previs and storyboarding with real human motion
  • Learning how mocap pipelines work with a low-cost tool

Pricing and licensing

DeepMotion runs on a freemium SaaS model. A free plan lets you process a limited number of animations, and paid subscriptions add more credits, longer videos and extra features.

Exact pricing and credit limits change over time, so check the official website for the current plans.

Pros and cons

The physics-based approach is the differentiator: output looks stable and grounded even when the source video is a bit noisy, and the whole flow lives in the browser. The free tier makes it easy to evaluate the service.

The downsides are credit-based limits, cloud processing waits, and results that still need cleanup for polished productions. Very loose clothing, unusual camera angles or overlapping people can degrade tracking quality.

Alternatives

  • Rokoko Vision: free video mocap that pairs with Rokoko's suit ecosystem
  • Move AI: markerless mocap with a focus on accuracy and camera rigs
  • Plask: browser-based AI mocap with built-in animation editing
  • Mixamo: free auto-rigging and a library of ready-made animations
  • Cascadeur: keyframe animation with physics-aware AI assistance
