Blender is a completely free, open-source 3D creation suite that covers the whole pipeline: modelling, sculpting, texturing, rigging, animation, simulation, rendering and even video editing. It started in the 1990s as an in-house tool and became one of the most beloved pieces of software in the industry thanks to its zero price tag and its fiercely passionate community.

What is Blender?

Blender is a full 3D production suite that you can download for free and use for literally anything, including commercial projects. It began life in 1995 as an in-house tool at the Dutch studio NeoGeo, created by Ton Roosendaal. When the studio ran into trouble in 2002, the community raised 100,000 euros to buy the source code and release it as open source, and the Blender Foundation was born.

Since then it has grown into an industry-grade tool used for animated films, game assets, VFX, architecture and countless YouTube tutorials. It does modelling, sculpting, UV unwrapping, texturing, rigging, animation, simulations, rendering with the Cycles and EEVEE engines, compositing and even video editing, all in one program.

Blender is also famous for its open development model: anyone can contribute code, and big releases arrive on a regular schedule. It is the go-to choice for indie game developers and hobbyists because the price is right and the learning resources are endless.

Go to blender.org and download the installer for your operating system. For most people the latest stable release is the right choice, while studios often stick to the Long Term Support releases that receive updates for two years.

Blender has a steepish learning curve, so the best first step is the official Blender Fundamentals playlist, which walks you through the interface and the core tools in a couple of hours. From there, just start modelling a simple object and let the tutorials take over.

Pros and cons

Blender's biggest strengths are the price, the community and the all-in-one workflow. Because it is free, tutorials, add-ons and help are everywhere, and you rarely need another tool for a full production. The development pace is fast and each release adds genuinely useful features.

The downsides are the learning curve and the interface. Blender is dense, and new users can feel lost in the sheer number of panels and shortcuts. For very large studio pipelines it also lacks some of the paid integrations that Maya or 3ds Max have, though the gap keeps shrinking.
